Now I hold my crotch cos I’m top notch…

I’ve been listening to De La Soul’s De La Soul Is Dead fairly obsessively for the past few weeks. I bought it the same day I picked up Black Sheep a while back. I’d had the cassette but never the CD. So I was fairly surprised to hear a bunch of tunes that weren’t on the cassette release. “My Brother’s a Basehead” quickly became one of my favorite rap songs ever. In fact, the songs left off the cassette are better than a handful that were on it. I always fast-forwarded through “Oodles of O’s” and “Pass the Plugs.”

I can’t believe I went so long without listening to this album. I think it’s one of the touchstones of the genre. It’s clever and thoughtful and full of great songs and little inside jokes. I’ve been putting it on every morning as I’m getting showered and dressed and every afternoon when I don’t have any work-related music I have to listen to.
