I’ve been in job limbo since December. I thought then that the answer to my seemingly constant money woes and stress about freelance work was to bite the bullet and look for a regular 9 to 5 job. Or 8 to 5 as it were. But, oh God, the prospect of spending 9 hours a day in an office…
Last week, I went on my first interview in years. The position was on Music Row in a job in which I have plenty of experience. Plus, it’s not really that complicated but I do have the computer background specific to the work. I knew the range of pay going in, but I felt sure that once they met me and knew my background, I’d be able to talk them up a bit.
I haven’t been offered the job and I haven’t tried to play hardball with them on the pay, but something about the interview told me they wouldn’t have a lot of wiggle room on the pay. And the starting pay is less than $10 / hour. I really don’t think my chances of talking them up 3 or 4 dollars an hour are good. The kicker is that it’s not even 40 hours a week. So my mind is pretty much made up.
But I still can’t help but think: $10 an hour? For skilled computer work in an office?
