Those Oscar thingys

I broke with long-standing tradition and actually watched the Academy Awards last night. I haven’t purposefully watched an awards show in… I totally blanked out. I don’t think I’ve ever watched an awards show on purpose. But there were alcoholic beverages and wagering involved. However, I didn’t really even get buzzed and I managed to lose the betting so horribly that the other bettors felt sorry for me.

I’d actually seen two of the motion picture thingys that were up for awards: The Squid and the Whale and March of the Penguins. That’s probably some sort of record since I don’t ever go to the movies. Well, nevermind. I saw March of the Penguins on DVD. So that wasn’t “going to the movies.” But I guess I did see it in the year of its release.

I guess everybody was surprised that Crash won Best Picture. But you know, didn’t Forest Gump win Best Picture? I’m more bothered that there’s already been a controversial movie called Crash. Doesn’t anybody check these things out?

Since I don’t really have any further comment on the whole spectacle of the Oscars, I thought I’d point to what my favorite bloggers were saying…

While reflecting on the awesomeness of Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, Listen Missy points to a pretty damning take-down of Crash.

Neil points out the not-so-subliminal message of the Awards: Oscar to DVD Watchers: Drop Dead!

And Jen rants about an interview she saw with Sid Ganis, Academy president and producer of Deuce Bigalow.
