Almost two weeks ago, I watched Tristram Shandy and thought it was kind of a let down and I say this as an enormous Steve Coogan fan. The movie uses a post-modern movie-within-a-movie technique (i.e. Coogan plays Coogan playing Tristram) and ultimately it’s pretty laborious.
Perhaps there’s some parallel between “Coogan” and Tristram’s story that I just wasn’t getting but mostly it just seemed like a bunch of fancy-pantsing for the sake of fancy-pantsing. Neither the movie or the movie-within-the-movie had much of a story to take away. And I wasn’t emotionally invested in either.
