If you listen very hard…

Boing Boing blogged about Heart’s performance of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors this morning and yeh, it’s pretty incredible. It’s a cool arrangement. Ann Wilson just rips it up.

But it prompted me to watch Led Zeppelin’s 1973 performance of the song at Madison Square Garden in the Song Remains the Same film.

Just watching four guys destroy that performance is amazing. I love The Song Remains the Same for the fact that the drums are just flat on the stage, Jimmy’s just plugged straight into his amps, and John Paul has to awkwardly move around his keyboard and bass rig. It’s like a club show. But the power in those four men playing that song that plainly just blows away some suit and tie event where a whole choir and horn section have to be used to bring in the dynamics.
