Saturday Matinee: Soderbergh’s black and white Indiana Jones edit
How the hell have I not written about this before? Steven Soderbergh, a director I love, made a silent, black and white cut of Raiders of the Lost Ark to demonstrate how well the movie was staged. It’s a fantastic tribute and study of the first Indiana Jones film. Soderbergh ends his description of the cut with this nugget:
At some point you will say to yourself or someone THIS LOOKS AMAZING IN BLACK AND WHITE and it’s because Douglas Slocombe shot THE LAVENDER HILL MOB and the THE SERVANT and his stark, high-contrast lighting style was eye-popping regardless of medium.
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to embed the video here so you’ll have to pop over to Soderbergh’s Extension 765 website to watch it. You’ll love it. Chromecast it. Plugin the laptop into a bigger screen. Do something to watch this on a bigger screen. And get some popcorn.
