I saw Willie Nelson at Humphreys on the Bay in San Diego Wednesday night

Wednesday night, I saw Willie Nelson and the Family at this great venue in San Diego called Humphrey’s on the Bay. It’s right on the water on Shelter Island. It feels large but it’s actually small or vice versa. I saw Rodrigo y Gabriela there a few years ago and it was that same experience. I think what it is, is that you’re seeing a band in an appropriately-sized venue. It’s not hugely large and it’s not a club. There’s space. It’s open air. It feels good.

Willie and Family were in fine form. They slipped in a bunch of songs that I hadn’t heard them do at all or at least in a while: “Help Me Make It Through Tonight” (which I notably saw performed by its author last year), “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground,” “Let’s Face The Music and Dance,” “South of the Border.” I love that they mix up the set every show.

It’s always a beautiful experience to see this man and his band, his family. Humphrey’s made it even more so.
